History/Background: link

Personality: Yona was raised fifteen years without ever having gone beyond the city surrounding her castle. At that time, she was a bright-eyed, yet naive young girl whose only "problems" were the fact that her true love only seemed to see her as a younger sister - and that even if her feelings were realized, her father wouldn’t allow them to be married anyway. She lost her mother at a young age, so she loved her father dearly and believed in him as a king completely, even though she’d never seen the world outside of the castle. To her, he was, perhaps, a cowardly king, but one who promoted peace. She was spoiled and there were a great many things she didn't understand.

Losing her father and being forced out of the castle set into motion a lot of changes for Yona. At first she was traumatized and couldn’t find what to live for. But after that, she began to slowly start over; building a strength inside of herself that she’d never had before. Though she begins to see that the kingdom her father ruled was not the happy, peaceful place she believed it to be, she still maintained her pride and sense of responsibility as his daughter; seeking to correct the injustices and protect the people of her land, even though she could not allow them to know that it was the doing of ‘Princess Yona’, taking on aliases for such situations. Despite being evicted from the castle and being presumed dead, Yona never lost her love for the people of the kingdom. She’s the type who simply can’t pass by people who are in need or suffering. She feels that if she can just share a fraction of the warmth she’s been shown by the people she’s met and her travelling companions then she’s sure that they’ll reach out their hands for help.

A new fierceness was born in Yona that never existed before. In situations where her friends are in danger, she’s been shown to put herself in danger time and time again to try and protect them, despite knowing that she doesn’t have the power they do. Whether it’s picking up a sword and putting herself between her comrade and her enemy, even when she’s never used one before in her life, or offering herself up as a distraction, Yona often doesn’t think twice about defending her friends despite her actual powerlessness. Because more than anything, her greatest fear is losing those people she cares about so much.

In situations where she thinks about what she’s about to do - such as climbing down a narrow cliff to gather some herbs - of course she’s terrified. She knows that unlike her friends, she isn’t particularly strong and she doesn’t have any special abilities. She’s very aware of her frail body and hates it. Constantly she’s thinking about how she can become stronger to protect the people she cares about and be useful to them. She no longer cares to be pampered - she wants to be taught. About the world, how to fight, and things such as cooking and cleaning. But the thing that’s remarkable about Yona is her amazing conviction. Once she’s set her mind to do something; she refuses to back down. Even if her legs are shaking and it’s hard to move, she forces herself to move forward one tiny step at a time. She never argues her fear. Of course she’s scared. She knows how easily she could die. But at the same time she refuses to allow it to hold her back.

Yona is also incredibly honest. Even if it’s something that would be fine to leave out, she won’t. When she received help on a particular trial, she was told that she could keep it a secret, but she told anyway and was ready to do it all over again to prove herself properly. She is also known to put significance on certain items, such as the hairpin that was given to her by Soo-won. Despite all that happened, when she thought she lost it, she went out at night and wandered aimlessly to find it, ending up rather far from the camp and putting herself in danger looking for it. For that reason, she can also understand the significance other people put into special items as well.

At first it was just her and Hak traveling together. At that time, Yona relied on him heavily and was asking him and him alone to support her. Though they might have split up and she could have lived a peaceful life as someone else, she simply couldn’t allow it. At that time, she hated even being away from him in the smallest amount. However, their party slowly grew and soon she had a whole network of support. Hak no longer had to support her on his own and she was able to overcome that fear of leaving his side to the point where now, she’s willing to go off on her own, even if none of her friends are going with her. She’s come to trust them so much in the short months that they’ve been together. Now she can say that even if they’re apart, she believes she can count on them. And more than that, she’s come to trust herself more. Instead of putting it all on others, she’s started to want to carry her own weight. Her goal is to be able to continue to grow so that she can support the others as well and protect them in return, despite the fact that their powers and abilities make that seem unnecessary.

Yona can still be very dense about certain subjects - primarily love and romance, although she's started to sense her feelings for Hak a little. Despite the fact that she sometimes says things that can be construed in a romantic nature, the statements are generally meant in a far more innocent nature and she doesn’t always seem to realize right away that she's said it in that way if at all. She doesn’t recognize romantic interest when it’s pointed at her, although she’s proven that outside of herself, she understands the adult side of relationships between men and women. But she hasn't mastered relating those feelings to herself. This is all proof that deep down, there are still parts of her that are innocent and simplistic. Her idealist nature is another that lends itself to her innocence. Even though they run into a lot of complicated situations, Yona always feels like there must be something they can do to help. And while some of her ideas are simplistic, she always acts with peoples’ best interests in mind.

There are also a number of situations where Yona has shown her anger and the face she makes has terrified grown men. That fierce anger comes from a very deep place; born of the betrayal she faced from Soo-won and has grown with every suffering person she’s met. Although she’s shown killer instincts regarding Soo-won, she also come to realize that despite her anger - when she had the opportunity, she simply couldn’t do it. Even though he hurt her more deeply than anyone else, her heart is unable to throw away it’s feelings for him entirely either. It’s painful for her, but being able to confess that fact to someone helped her accept it and move on a little, even though it still hurt. Even though she's come to understand his reasons for making himself King; she still has a hard time accepting it. Or perhaps it's best to say that she's incapable of making rational decisions without a little guidance where Soo-won is concerned. She freezes up only to boil over like a volcano and then take three steps back and get caught again.

When she’s forcing a happy face however, and she does this occasionally as a defensive mechanism, she’s very transparent. She acts overly perky and repeats the same lines often. Enough that no one could possibly believe that she was fine. Regarding physical weakness, she's a little better at hiding her discomfort and pushing forward; however, it usually very obvious that she's pushing herself and thus... that she can't possibly be as well as she claims.

She no longer puts herself before others and can connect with people now because she’s able to put herself on their level. She can empathize strongly with the suffering now because she’s been able to experience those kinds of feelings since leaving the castle. Yona has become very down to earth, and speaks very casually for a princess. She also speaks from the heart with a kind of warm honesty that’s both refreshing and charismatic. But she also recognizes that she can and is selfish and demanding at times. But all these things put together have shown to make her rather compelling. People listen to her because they see both the strength and the weakness in her and acknowledge her conviction to overcome the trials before her. But even as she grows stronger, she continues to carry a heap responsibilities on her shoulders; feeling responsible for other's injuries and being almost frantic to do something-- anything to save them, even putting herself in the way of great harm.

Gradually, Yona has started to realize a change in her feelings towards Hak. With that realization comes a few certain difficulties. Although there are still times when it goes over her head; the number of times that he flusters her by being near her has increased. When he's close to her there are times she finds it hard to think and speak normally with him-- and even when he's not she catches herself thinking about him a lot. Although she seems to be aware that she might seriously like him-- she still thinks it's completely unrequited and battles with dueling with feelings of wanting to give him his freedom and not wanting to let him go.

Her feelings for Soo-won have also gone through some development. Although she thought she'd never be able to forgive him and that she should want to kill him-- from the beginning she hadn't been able to. Over time her attitude has fluxuated between hostility, fear, uncertainty and curiosity. She really can't keep her cool around him one way or the other, regardless of how it surfaces. But she's come to understand his intentions a little through his actions and has admitted that she wants to understand him better. Ultimately she's come to terms with the fact that she believes deep down that the kind, sweet Soo-won she knew before wasn't fake, despite what he'd said.

Skills/Abilities: Compared to her companions, Yona often battles with the fact that she is in fact powerless. As far as skills - at first she didn’t have any. However, as her resolve grew, she decided that it wasn’t okay to continue on like that. And so she took up a bow and learned to use it. She has spent tireless hours practicing, and has proven that in serious situations, she has the strength and accuracy to shoot people down from a distance as well as small targets.

More recently she’s also begun studying swordsmanship, despite everyone’s reluctance to allow it. Compared to the bow, using a sword is a lot newer to her, and not as efficient. She hasn’t had much practice and the practice she did on her own wasn’t as effective. But she’s gotten to the point where she can utilize the lessons Hak taught her to get in blows. She doesn’t have great physical strength, but he’s taught her smart strategies and counter-moves. She has been praised for her form, although she knows she's no match for a larger opponent if she takes them head on.

She's also shown to have been watching her other comrades- Jae-ha in particular, and tried to pick up other moves such as martial arts... anything that might give her the upper hand in a situation. She thinks very carefully about the safety of herself and her companions and is always thinking about what she can use.

I'm sure you know the drill -- I want to know what you (yes you!) think about my roleplaying as it applies to Yona from the series Akatsuki no Yona.

And this is where you can tell me! No holds barred. Whether it's helpful crit or a suggestion - or even questions or love, this is an open post for you to share that with me.

You certainly don't have to be totally familiar with the canon to suggest that something might be off, however, I will note that I'm taking her from the manga, and I'm not familiar with the anime adaptation so if there are differences there, I'm not sure of them. But don't be shy regardless!

▶ PHYSICAL AFFECTION: You are welcome to offer up your affections to Yona. However unless she likes you, she's just going to outright tell you to stop joking around and act like you're kidding, with a sheepish smile on her face. If she does like you... well, it'll fluster her more, but she'll make the same arguments.
▶ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Is something I'd want to have discussed out in it's entirety beforehand. Yona will stand up to people when she's threatened, even if she doesn't stand a chance and she's more fierce than she looks. As for things like training HECK YES. Please help her learn better fighting skills, especially if you're willing to go all out and be a little rough on her for the sake of said training.
▶ RELATIONSHIPS: Have you heard of the friend-zone? Well, she'll likely put you there, whether she likes you or not. She doesn't acknowledge the possibility of people liking her as more than a friend.
▶ PSYCHIC & PSIONIC INFORMATION: I have no problem with people poking into Yona's mind if they want to, just give me a head's up! Yona's mind can be very chaotic or it can be very peaceful, depending on when you look. There are subjects that easily throw her brain into turmoil (example: Soo-won, love, betrayal, Soo-won...) But other times, she can be very focused and strong.
▶ MAGICAL INFORMATION: Yona isn't magical herself, although she does have a bond with a number of people that do have unique and great powers. So while you might not have to fear her... if her friends are around... well... it's dangerous to be mean to Yona if they're around.
▶ MEDICAL INFORMATION: Painfully human, and not particularly strong. She's gotten more accustomed to taking a beating, and has suffered open wounds and great falls before, living to tell about it. So her body has a strong fortitude against injury and illness. She pushes herself very hard however, so that's something that might come back to bite her - being that if she did get sick, it would probably be more serious.

DEVELOPMENT

Yona's arrival was... chaotic. Although it probably would have been so even without all the excitement. She lost something important to her -- but was able to get it back with some help. And despite how emotionally torn she was about the whole situation, she was able to pull herself together and help a few others with the rampaging birds. But most importantly, she was able to find both Hak and Ki-ja, although she learned the others were still nowhere to be found. They shared information about what they knew regarding Kouka as well as information about the new island they'd been brought to. Though she'd initially been letting fear and anxiety eat at her-- their presence brought back the feeling of security and determination that had been trying to slip away.
